Mood Board Genre

Here is a mood bood that I created of Mike Skinner and other artists, such as Plan B. As you can see the same sort of pattern is evident throughout, like the grimy kind of urban setting. Even in the bottom right hand picture where he appears to be in a more rural area, you can still see the lampost, relating it back to an urban area. In the majority of 'the streets' album covers you can see landscape figures, and quite obvious deliberate choice of setting. For example, in the top left one, you just have a plain old building, however he has made it look interesting an different by having it dead in the centre of the frame, and also by having some of the lights on, it adds to the mystery of the front cover. Also as you can see he has the trademark lighter on the bottom left of the screen and this pattern features on al of the streets' front covers in different colours.

Even with Mike Skinner's dress sense, you can tell the sort of environment he likes to film in, as there is a grimey atmosphere and a run down environment. This relates to the name of the artist 'the streets' as many people in this type of genre use the kind of environments that Mike Skinner uses. The graffitti and writing on the walls represents the un cared for poor quality area and this usually connotates the kind of background these artists come from, and the reaccuring locations throughout such music videos. His name is clever and relates to his album cover, as clearly the buildings featured in many of them are on the street, and even ones without bulidings, like the bus shelters and cars, you are still able to see the street featured in the picture.

Song Details

The song we have chosen as a group is Lock The Locks by The Streets.

We have chosen the song as we all find it quite different to the majority of other songs from our genre. Our song is much slower paced and contains very meaningful lyrics. Not only does Mike Skinner sing in our song, but we also have a featuring female artist, and this helps to attract a wider variety of audience and appeal to a much wider range of people. However by the meaningful story behind the lyrics it helps to portray this characters life out in a story, which we will try to put across to the audience in the form of a music video. The challenge will be having an equal amount of lip syncing and acting contained in our music video, as if it's too boring, the viewers will get viewer fatigue, and will not want to watch anymore of our music video. Although the streets is a fairly popular artist, a lot of his work goes unnoticed by people who are not familiar with his kind of urban genre, so in our group we decided to portray his work in a way so that many people are able to enjoy the music video, even if the music taste isn't quite to their ordinary. Many different locations will be needed when referring to our video as the lyrics talk about many different places such as his house and the pub, which we will clearly need to portray when creating our music video. In order to keep within the genre and the sort of style incorporated within the streets, we will need to keep our costumes and locations similiar to that of other 'the streets' videos, such as the hoodies and jeans in the launderette in his song, 'Dry Your Eyes Mate'. This will mean keeping to the conventions of our rap genre, rather than majorly challenging them. We will have to be very organised and plan out strategically which costmes will be used at certain locations, and give valid reasons for our choices made. I am looking forward to creating a music video for this song, as it will give me a chance to experiment and get into Mike Skinner's shoes, and have a chance to portray my take on the song over to our target audience.

679 started life in 2001 when Nick Worthington left XL Recordings to form a new label in partnership with Warner Music, with the first release being The Streets seminal debut, Original Pirate Material.


679 Artists were the first record label to sign 'grime' artists such as Wiley. This made them different from everyone else, making business shoot up in the grime and making other labels compete to get new artists etc.

679 Artists are growing bigger, and are hoping to sing more artists and get them to the top of the charts. Their ambitions are big but they have got a good reputation behind them, giving them such a good advantage.

LEX Records is an independent record label founded by Tom Brown in 2001.

The label is not focused on one particular genre although most releases are hip hop, alternative rock or electronic music.

This record label is very similar to others and releases the same type of music that we are going to produce.

XL Recordings is a British independent record label which was launched by Nick Halkes, Tim Palmer and Richard Russell with Beggars Banquet Records in 1989 to release its rave and dance music.


The label has grown into one of the most commercially successful and influential independent record labels in the world. They operate across a range of genres.
Since the late 1990s, XL Recordings expanded into other genres such as freak-folk, alternative rock, hip hop, and UK Garage. They are now the home to a range of artists including:

Eskibeat Recordings is collective of grime producers, and established by CEO Wiley. There has been much confusion about what exactly comprises Eskibeat Recordings, with many artists, mostly MCs, joining and leaving the collective before any recordings or releases were made. However, there have been moves to revitalize Eskibeat, with the label selling T-Shirts and releasing material, including Wiley's EP Grime Wave.

Analysis of Pop/Grime video: Devlin 'Brainwashed'

Brainwashed was the first single that Devlin released off of his debut album ‘Bud Sweat and Beers’. The song was released on the 8th of August 2010. This song proved to be very successful and even featured in the charts.

The music video for the song brainwashed uses a variety of media concepts.

The video is located in London, we can tell this by the variety of shots that are used. For example, the audience is given an establishing shot of Big Ben and The Houses of Parliament. Having been shown a popular landmark, allows the audience to recognize where the video is being set.  Moreover, there are many other specific locations within the music video. For example, the use of rooftops and dark rooms, gives off a mysterious and strange atmosphere.

There are a variety of colours used within the music video but the main colours used are dark. The use of the dark colours creates an unexplained feeling, but also mysterious. The colour can connote to the lyrics of the music, for example the name of the song is ‘Brainwashed’, and the colour black is very boring and plain, which can reflect to him being ‘Brainwashed’.

Within the video many of the cast and actors are all covered up. For example, they either have their hoods up or they are wearing balaclavas. Having an appearance likes can make them look scary and manipulating to the audience. Having costuming like this can be very stereotypical of the genre of music.

The lighting in the video is very effective, for instance the majority of the shots are filmed in the dark, therefore having good lighting is important. The lighting specifically works well when there is a close up of Devlin. For example, the light shines on the side of his body and face. This makes Devlin look a lot bolder and also brighter. The contrasts with the dark and background, which enables him to stand out even more.

From watching this video made by A level students you can see that they have tried to follow the conventions of a cheesey boy band video. From the close up shots showing the emotion of the character we can tell they have tried to impersonate typical groups like JLS. Also looking at the shots of the band performing together, is it much like a typical shot of a band, as in the majority of music videos there are shots of the band all in the same frame. As you can see, there are typical shots of intimacy like in almost every music video nowadays. I like the fact that in this video it starts the same as it ends, with the boy looking at the picture of the girl. I like the fact that in this video, it isn't just lip syncing it is also a storyline, to keeo the viewers from getting bored of the video.
This video is very well lip synced, and it is all in time with the song. The lighing in this video is very appropriate, as when they mood appears to be happy, when they're with the girl it is quite bright and cheery, and when the mood is more sinister and serious, it appears dark and more gloomy. They have used a variety of different settings which i found interesting, as it prevented me from getting bored throughout the video.

As you can see from the majority of our shots from the artists album covers show them with a very serious expression. For example Devlin's face in the top right hand corner shows that he is really concentrating on something that he is looking at. This shot can be perceived as Devlin is looking up, in order to personify his aspirations as an artist.
However Tim Westwoods manner is much different from Devlin's. The way Westwood is looking directly at the camera shows how serious he is about the shot, this could show his dedication to his job that he loves. By the use of having his hand close to the camera with his big bling watch on shows him as being big and powerful as his hand looks out of proportion to the rest of his body.
Ghetts in the top left hand corner has a different take on his shot from all the rest. By wearing the balaclava it portrays that he may want to hide his identity or meaning to the audience. Although he is doing this, he is still making some stern eye contact to the audience in order to really attract their attention into his look. This face he has absorbs the audiences gaze, and the white shirt on the white background makes him fade into the background, so by having the bright blue balaclava it really shows a contrast in colour and picture.
In contrast to both these shots Sloozie in the top left hand corner contains some Juxtapositioning in the shot, as it features her helping out an old Lady, and this is completely against the Grime genre which is usually about negative stuff and "being bad and hard". This is a clever shot to feature in as maybe it shows how different she is from the rest of the genre and artists.

Analysis of Rock video 3: Red 'Breathe into me'

'Breathe into me' is performed by a band called Red. Red are quite a small band compared to someone like Metallica, who have had chart hits and many albums. Although they have a small budget, they have still attempted to make a sterotypical rock video, being that the emotions are running very high and there are a lot of fast paces shots. Also by the use of lots of dark and gloomy colours, you get that low emotion feeling, like something has gone wrong or is about to go wrong.

1- This first image i have chosen is the first image that we see as the video starts. Immediately we can tell there is something wrong as there is somebody in a hopsital bed. The camera is central so that we can see the whole of the patient immediately. The colours are very boring and dull, which shows that maybe she is not cared about, also that is reiterated due to the fact she is on her own.

2- The second image is the first time we see the band playing together, however it is not a normal way to portray the first seeing of the band. They appear to be hidden behind some kind of curtain and our view of them is obscured. Again the colours are very dull and boring, besides a very dark red 'shard' like object in the centre of the screen.

3- The third image is a very close up shot of the patient and we can see that she is in trouble as she has a facemask on. Her face is right in the middle of the screen which shows that she is the most important in the screen at that moment. Again the colours are very plain and boring which shows the lack of wealth of this lady and the appartment she appears to be in.

4- This next image I chose because I thought it was rather strange and completely out of context at this point in the video. The picture appears to be of the lady on the bed, but she seems reletivley pleased however the colours again are very neutral blacks and whites, and she is looking straight at the camera as if to reach out to the audience.

5- This is a very scary image as we can see the women lying on the bed again, with the lyrics being sung in the background 'breathe your life into me', and then we see the man standing over her in the background, which we can perceive as him singing it to her. This is a very scary image still as we cannot tell from the distance of the camera who exactly this man is or what his intentions are.

6- This sixth image is again of the band, and like a lot of music videos, when the music picks up, or the chorus is about to come around, it cuts to a shot of the band performing so that the audience can see them. However once again the view is slightly obscured, so it adds to the mystery of the band, and why they are singing about breathing life into ''him''.

7- This image i have chosen is of a heart monitor and it is at a very clever time in the song. It is straight after the verse so it brings the audience into realisation about where the song/story is heading. However the monitor is not completely in the middle of the screen so it adds that eerie effect to the video.

8- This image I chose to screen shot because it is quite a nice camera shot of the person we perceive as being the patient, and the one that is supposedly in trouble. At this point in the song we start to see her eyes flicker as if she is awaking, but besides this she is still motionless laying on the bed.

9- This last image I chose I thought was very obscure as there are many pictures on the floor or this girl laying on the bed. This adds to the mystery of the story behind the song and the pictures are shown at the climax of the song, so it shows to the audience that this is a really important part of the story.

As you can tell, Red 'Breathe into me' does follow a conventional Rock genre music video, as it is very fast paced, quite dark and emotions are running high. Also the focus is mainly on that one girl, which a lot of rock videos like to do, is focus on one person.

Analysis of Rock video 2: Evans Blue 'Erase my scars'

Evans Blue are yet another minor rock band that i have chosen as i think it is interesting to see how bands on smaller budgets try to stay within the stereotypical attributes of a rock video. As you can see from my screen shots, it is very dark and the mood does not look very happy.
-
1- The first image is of what we see first on the video, and it is of a man looking rather upset or discomforted. He is right in the centre of the screen and he appears first so we as the audience can tell he is going to be the main character behind this storyline. Usually also in Rock Videos's the lead singer is usually the main character behind the story, and in this case that is true.

2- The second image is of a T.V screen. Much like Eminem's song 'Mockingbird' He appears to be watching a video of what the audience perceive to be his child on T.V. The lyrics 'Erase my Scars' suggests he wants to forget his past and get on with life, maybe get back in touch with the child on the Screen.

3- The Third image is an important image that all rock video's contain and it is where the all the band members are seen together so that the audience know who is performing the song. However they are not shown normally in bright lights and on a stage, they are in a dark colour so you can barely make out their faces, and this adds to the mysteriousness of the band.

4- This image I thought was very impressive as it is of the drummer on a point in the song where he was most important, as this was where the song climaxed before the chorus. However it is not just a normal shot of the drummer, it is very slowed down so the impact of what he is doing is greater and the audience get that sense of emotion he us putting into his drumming.

5- This fifth image is again of the main character andthis time it appears he is blaming himslef for something, as the lyrics are very harsh and he is pointing to himself in an angry manner. The room behind him and his attire are both very dark and gloomy, which helps the audience to get into perspective the kind of depressing mood the song is in.

6- This image shows the main character with his head down as if he has caused all this mess himself, and he appears to be looking down in disbelief. In the background you can see the video of the little boy playing, almost looking at him and taunting him as if to say 'daddy it was all your fault'.

7- This is another 'band moment' and as the song hits a climax, it changes to the band and the big flash of light lights up the room. This is the first time we see a positive kind of light throughout the whole video and it is on the whole band, including the main character. This band are very good when performing together and they cannot do it without one another, so the best moments of the song show all the members of the band.

8- This is a close up of the lead guitarist and I thought this was a good idea to use this shot then as it showed how important he was at this specific time in the song. Also the rain and other gloomyness in the background make the emotions very depressing and unhappy which helps to translate the mood of the song to the audience.

9- This last image in the song is very powerful, as it shows that the main character/singer has given in to defeat as he is kneeling down and looking into the floor like there is nothing left for him. This is where the song starts to fade, and this can be interpreted as his dreams/ambitions of getting his child back fading.

Analysis of Rock Video 1: Saosin 'You're not alone'

This song 'You're not alone' is performed by not such a well known rock band, and you can tell this as their Youtube views are few only just over 1million. However they still follow many conventions of a typical rock song. As you can see just from my screen shots, the video is very dark and there is no colour in the video what so ever. This adds to the story being very sad and sinister and about death. The lyrics in this song also relate to suicide, and the lyrics are trying to explain that there is always someone in a worse position than you, so hang in there and stay alive, as there is more to life than you think. 'There's more to this i know'.

1- The first image we see is very stereotypical of a rock video, as initially we see the remains of violence, as we see a man beaten up and left in an alley with ripped clothes. As this first image is in black and white we can tell that the rest of the video will be in black and white to give that olden day effect.

2- This second image is of showing the typical way of brutal life back in the olden days. We can also tell it is meant to be the olden days by there dress sence, hair styles and items we see in the background, such as old tele's and bicycles. This image also depicts violence as the main singer, who starts to sing in this scene is being held by 2 men either side of him, and it does not appear to be in friendly manner.

3- The third image I print screened i thought was rather interesting as it features a little girl sitting on the side of the road with a rather strange expression on her face. She appears to be giving the man being dragged down the street a dirty look, as if to show her dissapointment towards him. As she is sitting high up on a balcony type area, she appears to have a higher status than the main singer, which is strange as she is only a little girl.

4- This image shows the location of the video and the setting of where the story is set. We can tell it's quite a narrow, poverty stricken street and it does not look very luxury or clean. The street also seems pretty deserted besides the one man sitting on the stairs who appears to let the guys through.

5- This image features all of the band members playing together and the camera is at a high angle to show that maybe people are looking down on them. However, the lead singer is in the middle of the shot to show that he is most important, however each member does get a certain amount of solo screen time.

6- In this image, we meet the girl who the song appears to be about, as she seems to be at the doctors and receiving treatment or diagnosis for something or other. We can tell she is important and th story is about her as the only bit of colour on the video appears on her, as her shoulder is blue.

7- This image is a very important one in the story, as we see that after the doctor shakes his head as if to say 'she's not going to make it' the parents of the girl both have horrified looks as they know they are going to lose their daughter. This relates to stereotypical rock songs as emotions are running high and it is quite depressing.

8- This 8th image shows a death, which again reitterates the sad sinister mood that this song is meant to be creating. By the camera focusing on the death of this man, we (as the audience) are meant to assume that this is what is going to happen to this girl.

9- This last image is very powerful, as it seems that many people are dying and they are all going up to heaven together. This goes perfectly with the lyrics they are singing, being 'You're not alone' and that they will be together in heaven. The little stage at the bottom of the shot is where they are performing, and people from all around the town seem to be gathering there seeing off the dead.

Analysis of Pop video 3: Rihanna 'California King Bed'

Rihanna's song 'California King Bed' follows a very stereotypical approach to a female pop artists song video. The use of sex appeal is a clever way of attracting all sorts of viewers, as the male audience will find Rihanna attractive and this will draw them into watching the video, and the female audience can see Rihanna as having the perfect lifestyle/figure and can aspire to be like her.

1- From the first image, we can see the 2 contrasting colours immediately. As the white clothing she is wearing, although it shows wealthyness and purity, also clashes nicely with the deep red of her hair which can be used to connote her deep love or feelings for the man in the video. However, taking some of the lyrics into consideration when she talks about 'being apart' this red in her hair could be used to depict her anger.

2- This second image I have chosen shows the kind of location that she is in. It looks very peacefu and calm and this could further show her wealthyness as her location could be seen as a kind of idealistic world. However the dark red of the trees also goes with the dark red of her hair and that kind of sinister feeling is portrayed the whole way through the song.

3- This third image shows her luxury appartment, which is a pure white colour and this tops off her location as to how wealthy she is. However, this setting can be seen as her kind of 'Utopia' as the clouds and the blue sky in the background aswell as clashing with her red hair, show how calm and peaceful the area is, and that she appears to be there care free, besides this trouble with a male character. This could be seen as an aspirational lifestyle to all of the audience watching.

4- The fourth image I have chosen is a full body shot of Rihanna, and by chosing this one, you can see the full diversity of shots contained in a music video. As well as jsut showing the range of shots, you can again see Rihanna's red hair clashing with the blue background of the sky to show that she is the most important thing in the environment. Also she is in the centre of the shot, which shows that the audience are meant to be focusing on her rather than anything else.

5- Like the majority of music videos, there is a bit of intimacy shown in the video, and shot number 5 shows that, as she appears to be laying in a mans arms. However, this is very contradictory of the lyrics as she is singing about how far apart they are.

6- This image links perfectly to the last, as this image shows her on the opposite side of the bed to her man, and even though she is not in the centre of the shot, she still stands out the most because of her vibrant red hair, which again shows she is the most important in the video. The song title 'California King Bed' suggests, that the man on the far side of the bed could be the king and her the queen, however it appears as if he is paying no attention to her which could possibly be why in the next shot...

7- She appears to be looking out to the viewers lustfully as if she needs someone else's attention because she is not getting enough with the person she is with. Here she again uses her sex appeal to attract the audience into her gaze, and she is yet again right in the centre of the screen. However we can only see one of her eyes as her hair covers the other, this could add to the mysteriousness of her character.

8- This is a very unique part of the video as not only does the music tempo and style change, but al of the colour seems to drain out, and the only thing that stands out are her white garments. This is very clever as it could be seen as her losing all hope, as she sings 'just when i felt about giving up on us'. This then leaves the last shot very clever as it finished the video like a fairytale ending.

9- The last image of the video is very appropriate as when the colour floods back into the screen she appears to be back closer with her partner, and this finishes the video like a fairytale ending with the cliche 'happily ever after'. As well as getting what she wants (being the man) she is still in her Utopia like environment, with her white satin clothes, expensive apartment and the bright blue sky, and fluffy clouds in the background.

Analysis of Pop video 2: Pitbull, Neyo, Afrojack and Nayer 'Give me everything tonight'

Give me everything tonight is a recent pop song performed mainly by Pitbull but with help from other artits, such as Neyo, Afrojack and Nayer. The song is about enjoying themselves that night because they think that maybe they may not get the chance to tomorrow. In the video, we see Pitbull and Neyo, surrounded by many women at different points throughout and it's as if they are all individually trying to impress them in order to win their 'love'.

1- This is the first shot we get of the music video, and very conventionally of Pop videos, there is a Rich, well off looking man with a women near to his side. This appears to be his 'partner' at first, but as the story develops in this video, we see that he isn't interested in just her, he likes the attention from a lot of girls.

2- To further the example of this, of these men not satisfied with just one women, the next shot is of Neyo with 2 women with him, he appears to have just 1 initially as he has his arm around her, but as the other women steps on to the platform with him, he checks her out.

3- Besides the rich grey coloured suits, the wealth of these 2 men is furthered when the establishing shot shows a very beautiful view of the city, and this shows the importance of these 2 men.

4- The next screenshot I took I thought was important to the story within the music video, as it shows that maybe he is content with 1 women in this story as he seems to be laughing and joking around with her 'flirting'. This video contradicts the view of many pop videos, being that a lot of videos people tend to find their true love and it's like a fairytale ending, as this portrays the men as 'players' due to the fact the are constantly shown with different girls.

5- This 5th image that i chose of this song was for me very important, as unlike the rest of the women in the video, this women is shown on her own, and in a sexy way, so this shows that she is the women of desire in the video. She appears on a blue background so that she stands out and so that the viewers recognise she is important.

6- The 6th image form the video i have chosen is of one of the ladies getting jealous as the man she is with is looking elsewhere. This is quite stereotypical of rich successful males, as you read in the papers all the time about footballers having affairs and flings with oher people. For example, John terry or Ryan Giggs. So this image shows that the story in the video, that the men cannot be trusted and that they always look for more attention.

7- This screen shot shows what kind of atmosphere the song is, and that is quite an upbeat clubbing tune, and that is why there is a party going on in the background. This shows the tempo and pace that these people are living there lives and clearly, due to the way they treat the women who are interested, they are not ready to settle down yet.

8- This image shows yet another women getting jealous which reitterates the point that the men in the video are just there to have a good time, not to settle down with a women just yet. However, it does convey that these men are very sought after as many women seem to be trying to get with them.

9- In every music vdeo this part is important, as it is where all the singers/performers are pictured in the same shot so that the audience can grasb who is singing and what bits.
- As this is quite an upbeat and fast paced songs, the cuts between shots are quite quick to reitterate the tempo of the song. The choice of clothing is very appropriate as well, as the 2 men who seem uper class and important are in smart suits with ties, and the imporant women who appears halfway trhough is in a very sexy dress.

Analysis of Pop video 1: 'Rain over me' Pitbull & Marc Anthony

Rain over me is a very good pop song featuring Pitbull and Marc Anthony. It is a very conventional way to portray a pop song as it contains many desired items for men, such as nice cars and attractive women. This is a very easy and widely used way of attracting men to the video and appealing to them. As this song is a very upbeat song, there is a lot of quick cuts between shots.

1- In the first shot, we can see where the song and scene is introduced. it is kind of like an establishing shot in a film, as it is a very high up shot, showing the environment of where the video is being shot. This is commong in many music vidoes, as the audience need to establish where it is being set. As well as the area being shown, it also contains the title of the song, so the audience immediately know what song they are about to listen to.

2- The second shot I chose, is very sterotypical for a man's pop song, as it contains a very nice sports car which is used to appeal to the male audience watching the video, as they can aspire to be as successful as the artist and own a nice car like the one in the video. The choice of the colour Blue is effective as well, as one of the ladies featured in the video is also Blue and this shows that 2 desired things/people from the Video are equally as good as eachother in this man's eyes.

3- In this screen shot, you can see a very attractive looking lady, and this is clearly used to attract the male characters as she is looking lustfully out of the window in what appears to be 'a search for the man singing the song' Pitbull.

4- In this 4th picture we can actually see where the women is, and that she appears to already have a man, but that maybe she is not happy with him, so is looking out in lust for anotyher man to treat her properly.

5- Here we can see both male characters in the same shot, and very sterotypically for rich music artists in videos, they are both in white, which portrays their rich and pure background. Also you can see the luxury car behind the guy on the left which extends the luxury of the shot.

6- In a lot of Music videos, animals feature and these help to portray the mood of the video, and help to kind of tell the story of the music. In this Music video we can see a snake and a scorpion, which suggests a very sinister nature to the story, but it also fits in with the desert environment that they are in, as it would be quite obscure to see something like a white rabbit in his arms for example.

7- This shot contradicts what we have previously seen with the bright and barron conditions as we see here 2 ladies dancing in front of 2 men, and it is raining, which is reiterating the song name. By the way ther is 2 women dancing in front of the 2 men, it is like a fairytale kind of ending as the 2 men have finally got what the wanted which was the 2 women.
